The father of Horatio Nelson Rhees is unproven and doubtful.
There is a tradition that Horatio Nelson Rhees (born 3 July 1802), is the illegitimate child of Lord Horatio Nelson and Harriet Rhees of Bath.
Charles Horatio Rhees, son of Horatio Nelson Rhees (born 1802), wrote in a letter to other family, dated May 24, 1887, from Hemel Hempstead. He talks of speaking to an Aunt Kifford, who told him: "He [Horation Nelson Rhees] was christened Horatio Nelson and that was his father's name... He lived with my father [Charles Harper] and mother and they used to say how much he, your father, was like his father, Horatio Nelson, the Great Sea Captain". Later in the same letter Charles Horation Rhees relates that his sister Jane "...spoke up and said that before her grandmother died [Harriet Rhees, supposed mistress of Lord Nelson] she told her that her father was the son of Lord Nelson, and if ever she had a son she wanted her to name him after his grandfather Horatio Nelson." [A complete transcript of the letter is available if desired]
Another document written by Mildred Rhees Cragun (now dead) says "My grandfather, Charles Horatio Rhees is said to have quoted his father, Horation Nelson rhess, as saying as he and his mother [Harriet Rhees, supposed mistress of Lord Nelson] would walk past the mansion provided by the government for the hero, "That if right was right, you, my son, would be living in that beautiful home."
Is the illegitimate child plausible? Lord Nelson was clearly a womanizer. He left his wife Fanny to live with his mistress, Emma. He bought an estate for her and his illegitimate child by her, Horatia.
Yet, there are several questions that remain to be answered:
Where was Nelson when the child would have been conceived?
Horatio Nelson Rhees was born 3 July 1802 in Widcombe, Bath, Somersetshire. That would place his conception approximately November 1801. Where was Lord Nelson in November 1801? Was he anywhere near Bath?
Was Lord Nelson ever in Bath, and when? What were his ties to Bath? Lord Nelson was familiar with Bath. He recuperated there in 1780 and again after the loss of his arm in 1797-1798. His father Edmund was there many times for health reasons, and indeed seems to be living there in 1801-1802, dying there in April 1802.
However, his father being there was not necessarily proof the Nelson himself was in Bath during that season. Indeed, Nelson was apparently uncomfortable around his father because of the abandonment of his marriage to Fanny. Fanny became nursemaid to his Father.
In the fall of 1801, Nelson returned to England to Merton near Wimbeldon in October 23. This was renewed time back with Emma, in their new house.
One supposes because of his interest in being near his mistress and 9 month old daughter in their new home, there is significant pull to stay near London. Because of the discomfort of his relationship with his father and his wife, who were apparently in Bath, there is significant push to stay away from Bath.
One further supposes because of the renewed and now quite public relationship with Emma in the fall of 1801, there is less likelyhood to be promiscuous during this time.
So, I conclude, that there is nothing absolute, such as being at sea during November 1801, that would prevent Lord Nelson from being in Bath. Even so, I conclude, absent any more information, the probability of him coming to Bath in November 1801 and having a dalliance there, is not as likely as it might have been at other times.
So far, I have been unable to find any other documented children of Lord Horatio Nelson, besides Horatia, the daughter born to Emma Hamilton.
Was it common or popular to claim Lord Nelson as the father of illegitimate children?
Lord Horatio Nelson is one of the biggest heros in British history. Nelson's leadership at the battle of Trafalger saved Britain from defeat by the French. To have Lord Nelson as a father is not unlike claiming Abraham Lincoln or George Washington as a father. I need to research whether other claims have been made.
At this time, I have no evidence one way or another. I leave this connection in the database as a disputed relationship. | Family: F516
